    This is called Invictus. it is by William Ernest Henley

    Out of the night that covers me,
    Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
    I thank whatever gods may be
    For my unconquerable soul.

    In the fell clutch of circumstance
    I have not winced nor cried aloud.
    Under the bludgeonings of chance
    My head is bloody, but unbowed.

    Beyond this place of wrath and tears
    Looms but the horror of the shade,
    And yet the menace of the years
    Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.

    It matters not how strait the gate,
    How charged with punishments the scroll,
    I am the master of my fate;
    I am the captain of my soul.

    Sacred Elegy V by George Barker

    “Fiend behind the fiend behind the fiend behind the fiend.
    Mastodon with mastery, monster with an ache.
    At the tooth of the ego, the dead drunk judge:
    Wheresoever Thou art our agony will find Thee Enthroned on the darkest altar of our heartbreak
    Perfect, Beast, brute, bastard, O dog, my God!”

    England in 1819

    An old, mad, blind, despised, and dying king,--
    Princes, the dregs of their dull race, who flow
    Through public scorn,--mud from a muddy spring,--
    Rulers who neither see, nor feel, nor know,
    But leech-like to their fainting country cling,
    Till they drop, blind in blood, without a blow,--
    A people starved and stabbed in the untilled field,--
    An army, which liberticide and prey
    Makes as a two-edged sword to all who wield,--
    Golden and sanguine laws which tempt and slay;
    Religion Christless, Godless--a book sealed;
    A Senate,--Time's worst statute unrepealed,--
    Are graves, from which a glorious Phantom may
    Burst, to illumine our tempestous day.

    Grimnir should recognize this (if he ever logs on)

    and what became of the cat and the hare?
    did they break free to purer air?
    to guess their fate we shouldn't dare
    perhaps their tale closed well
    but for all the beasts trapped in the nether
    all life from out the loch and heather
    the flock that could not work together
    are surely trapped in hell

    Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
    The Reaper and the Flowers

    There is a Reaper, whose name is Death,
    And, with his sickle keen,
    He reaps the bearded grain at a breath,
    And the flowers that grow between.

    "Shall I have nought that is fair?" saith he;
    "Have nought but the bearded grain?
    Though the breath of these flowers is sweet to me,
    I will give them all back again."

    He gazed at the flowers with tearful eyes,
    He kissed their drooping leaves;
    It was for the Lord of Paradise
    He bound them in his sheaves.

    "My Lord has need of these flowerets gay,"
    The Reaper said, and smiled;
    "Dear tokens of the earth are they,
    Where he was once a child."

    "They shall all bloom in fields of light,
    Transplanted by my care,
    And saints, upon their garments white,
    These sacred blossoms wear."

    And the mother gave, in tears and pain,
    The flowers she most did love;
    She knew she should find them all again
    In the fields of light above.

    O, not in cruelty, not in wrath,
    The Reaper came that day;
    'Twas an angel visited the green earth,
    And took the flowers away.
