    Google

    Post by Kaen on Fri May 07, 2010 5:32 pm

    Google moved our search results to the right and gave us some leftnavbarthing recently.

    There are some extensions for Firefox and Chrome which will remove the left navigation bar. But at least on my machine (in Chrome), they show the bar briefly for a second, and then make it disappear, which is distracting. So I did some messing around...

    CHROME
    1. Install this right here extension: https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/pabfempgigicdjjlccdgnbmeggkbjdhd

    2. Go to the extensions page, hit OPTIONS for that add-on.

    3. Under BASICS, hit none. That rainbow is obnoxious.

    4. Under STYLES, hit ADD NEW STYLE.

    5. I don't know how to mess around with Domain and stuff in this particular extension, so just check the All sites box. You competent people can figure this out on your own.

    6. In your blank style document, enter this crap:
    Code:
    #leftnav {display: none !important;}

    #center_col {
    position: relative !important;
    left:-165px !important;}

    7. Give it a name, and hit SAVE.

    FIREFOX
    1. Install the Stylish add-on from the Mozilla website.

    2. While on google.com, hit WRITE NEW STYLE > for google.com in that little menu they hide in the bottom righthand corner (I think it is still there?)

    3. Add:
    Code:
    #leftnav {display: none !important;}

    #center_col {
    position: relative !important;
    left:-165px !important;}

    4. Give it a name, hit save.

    To be fair, it is more aesthetically pleasing, The Google logo lines up real nice with the left nav, and the search box lines up with the results, creating a grid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grid_(page_layout)). The problem is that the left nav is redundant as heck. It adds no value. Most importantly, my eyes are used to the results being on the far left asdfgh.

    It's redundant, unusual, and a waste of space.
