So today I'm watching Season 02 random episodes on a whim and I see this during the whole Kari alone being saved by Divermon oddity that got canceled in the show and replaced by MaloMyotismon. I'll elaborate more after I explain. Well I recognized some of the digi-code from having been a way-too-hardcore digifan back in the day. Each letter of digicode is a cipher that is either of the English alphabet or a Japanese kana. So I pull out my ollllllld ass image file with the cipher key on it and get to work. (This is Ep 13 by the way)
It decrypts to:
Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn
I smirked at the HP lovecraft reference. Then Kari passes a sign with digicode on it. I translate that as "Innsmouth". Smirk again at the Cthulhu fiction.
THEN I SEE IT. In my childhood I knew this Digimon's silhouette as Dragomon. I also knew his Japanese name was Dagomon.
Dragomon was renamed from Dagomon because they figured American kids wouldn't get the reference. It came from Dagon, the avatar of Cthulhu, one of the two rulers of the Deep Ones. Then I remember that oddity about the episode from when I was a kid. After Kari gets trapped in that area and Dagomon rises from the ocean...NOTHING ELSE HAPPENS. They just continue the next episode as if it never happened and I remember wondering what went on. Later I found out that they retconned a story arc that would involve Dagomon replaced with Kimeramon instead.
AND NOW IT HITS ME. DIGIMON SEASON 02 WAS GOING TO BE A LOVECRAFT SETTING WITH A CTHULHU PARALLEL.
